Grizzly
Bears Forever!
A good site especially if you are a secondary science
teacher who would like to bring more environmental education
about grizzly bears into your school. CPAWS Calgary-Banff's
Grizzly Bears Forever! is a curriculum-tied, science-based
program that helps Junior High students understand the
challenges that grizzly bears face in the central Rockies
ecosystem. Through the grizzly bear, topics such as
biodiversity, human impact and species interactions
are examined. This is a FREE program to schools in the
Bow Valley region that includes a fully illustrated,
112-page teacher activity guide and poster kit, an awesome
website, a (soon-to-be-released) Sponsor-A-Grizzly Program,
and school visits and presentations.
Yellowstone
to Yukon Conservation Initiative
This innovative program focuses on a bold new plan to
preserve biodiversity throughout the Yellowstone to
Yukon ecoregion (which includes the Bow Valley watershed).
Students work through the Environmental strand of the
ENVOE curriculum - from the foundation level through
to field investigations and taking action to help the
environment - and learn important citizenship and critical
thinking skills in the process. And the grizzly bear
is a big part of the whole thing!
The
Bears of Banff
Of particular interest is "The Bears of Banff" activity.
In this simulation game students assume the role of
grizzlies as they try to meet their basic needs - and
reproduce! - in a troubled national park.

Alberta's
Teacher's Guides to Threatened Species
Look for the new Grizzly Bear Teacher's Guide soon to
be released as part of the Alberta government's Teacher's
Guides to Threatened Species program. The Alberta government
believes "environmental education is an important tool
to help Albertans understand environmental issues that
affect our province." In an effort to improve awareness
of environmental issues in Alberta, the government provides
comprehensive and fun-filled materials to support Alberta
environmental education programs. They offer workshops
on environmental topics to Alberta teachers and extend
the department's educational messages to schools and
communities throughout the province.
